Background
The Old Brewery Quarter brings together multiple projects. At its heart, historic Bass House will become an immersive Brewing Heritage and Social History Experience, developed in partnership with the National Brewery Heritage Trust, including a Lounge café-bar all-day venue serving ales brewed in the town. The nearby Town House will be sympathetically restored for flexible future use, while the Water Tower will become a landmark attraction with rooftop viewing platform. A new Events Square will connect the town centre, historic brewery buildings and the Washlands, creating a focal point for culture and social activity, and the Washlands Visitor Centre will provide educational and exhibition spaces, interactive classrooms, a café and a riverside terrace overlooking the Washlands. Plans are also approved for Carling House to be converted into a modern branded hotel, providing high-quality accommodation at the heart of the development.
The opportunity
The Old Brewery Quarter development follows the completion of the Washlands Enhancement Project, transforming the riverside area with a new play space, boardwalks and trails, and a redesigned Garden of Remembrance. Alongside key partnerships with the National Brewery Heritage Trust and Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, the development offers excellent opportunities for the hospitality sector, with further opportunities for investment, partnerships and private sector involvement in the delivery of the scheme. The development is anchored by £23.8m of Towns Fund investment.
